Carlos Colin is a Mexican artist from Guadalajara who currently lives in Vancouver. He began his artistic work in 2003 and uses a great diversity of languages (painting, photography, installation, embroidery, mural, drawing and others). The artist prioritize in research in the Latin American region, considering the influence of the baroque in contemporary art. His study is precisely to evaluate the type of intervention that the baroque plays in the Latin culture and, with this study, believes that the daily life of the Latin American is influenced by elements inherited from the strong interference of baroque art at that time and such influences are reflected in politics, religion, society and current cultures.

Carlos Colin is a researcher interested in contemporary social-political-cultural manifestations, in his words:

“As a Latin American artist, my research and practice allow me to investigate and question how our daily lives, especially in Mexico, are reflected and affected by elements and patterns of political, religious, social, and cultural activities since colonial times using baroque as a principle to popular submission. One of my primary focuses is the baroque concepts in the Latin American region, and, as contemporary art in the twentieth and twenty-first century, show the legacies and inconveniences of the Baroque since its intervention and introduction into our cultures.

The research in which I support my artistic and theoretical production was realized through perceptions, history, social movements and struggles, local resistance and subversion, diasporas and marginalities. My research topics explore and connect cultural, social, theoretical, political, religious, historical and contemporary manifestations, added to the manifestations of the Baroque as a colonial legacy and the base of contemporary Mexico and, by extension, of all Latin America.

My areas of research include Latin American art, Latin American history, art history, anthropology, ethnography, contemporary art and Indigenism. In this way, I consider that art and society can conceive and develop new forms of cultural knowledge through the locality, the region and its diasporas, which continues to create an expanded field in Latin American art.

One of the objectives of my research is to encourage new generations to be exposed to Latin American theories, cultures and knowledge in order to better understand and value the richness and diversity of Mexico and the region of Latin America as catalysts of wisdom.”

It is easy to see that Carlos Colin is an artist who strives to perceive his surroundings and to produce well-known works of art that reflect different cultural elements, which validates one of his objectives: to provide greater visibility to the culture of Latin America, using art and research as instruments.
