Dragos Badita is a young Romanian artist whose painting has a classic style marked by a strong awareness of life as something ephemeral and that time goes by irreparably. He represents the ephemeral in order to eternalize it in time. It is another vision of the existential that vibrates in his work.
The people and places present on his works comes from the artist’s memory, from everything he has seen and experienced, as demonstrated in his latest work “Winter Sleep.” He seeks to represent the fleetingness of the moment through landscapes and figures. His work constantly reinforces the same theme and it is possible to visualize this aspect in the character of his fiancée, who is actually a pictorial representation of a religious image that inspires protection when represented dressed in blue, like the Virgin Mary. The blue evokes calm and serenity, along with a woman’s face that brings peace, immersed in a dream. He even combines his paintings with video or installation.
In one of his black and white paintings, a sledge is abandoned in a white landscape, lifeless and whose vision extends the spectator to the infinity. It seems that snow brings everyone back from their childhood. These paintings are loaded with great nostalgia, but which are not necessarily sad. They evoke a pleasant and reassuring feeling, creating a cozy refuge.
The landscape of snow, calm, bland, peaceful, evokes a memory that wakes you from the sleep of unconsciousness and emptiness. Among the elements present in “Winter Sleep”, it is possible to find the correct framing, which gives an immediate idea of the physical emotional or mental situation of the characters, the distance that separates them from the world. Dragos Badita has a work that exhibits beauty and induces contemplation. The feeling of melancholy marks his work as if it was extending to beyond material life.
The introspective dimension of the work is explicit in “White Sleep,” a sublimated landscape. The landscape of snow is adopted by the artist countless times because he appreciates the effects of the light provoked by it. Dragos Badita talks about soul, adventure and human nature in an intense way.
Dragos Badita contemplates meticulously at the body and demonstrates an inexorable desire through this lost landscape. Beauty is pure. He captures the natural moment. The result is a new freedom of touch, more expressive than descriptive.
We can tell that what is striking in his work, with his landscapes and his beloved, is that he puts sensitivity in time, as if he was giving life to it.
